제인 오스틴(Jane Austen, 1775년 12월 16일 ~ 1817년 7월 18일)은 유명한 영국의 소설가였다. 섬세한 시선과 재치있는 문체로 18세기 영국 중·상류층 여성들의 삶을 다루는 것이 특징이다. 생전에는 그리 유명하지 않았으나, 20세기에 들어와서 작품 중 《오만과 편견》, 《이성과 감성》등이 여러 번 영화화되는 등 인기를 끌고 있다. 1775년 12월 16일에, 햄프셔주 스티븐턴의 교회에서 태어났다. 잉글랜드 성공회 교구사제(Vicar)인 아버지 조지 오스틴(1731년 - 1805년)은 그가 9세때 일찍이 고아가 되었지만, 큰 아버지 프랜시스 오스틴의 도움으로 옥스퍼드 대학교에 들어갔다. 어머니 카산드라(1739 - 1827)는 제인 외에 7명의 형제자매를 두었다.
